Day 1: Cusco – KM 82 – Wayllabamba

Your journey begins with an early transfer from Cusco to KM 82, the official starting point of the Inca Trail. After passing through the checkpoint, you’ll start your trek along the Urubamba River, surrounded by stunning views of the Andes. The trail is relatively flat, making it an excellent warm-up for the days ahead.

Along the way, you’ll visit the fascinating archaeological site of Patallacta, an ancient Inca settlement known for its agricultural terraces and strategic location. The day ends with an overnight stay at the Wayllabamba campsite, located at 3,000 meters (9,842 feet). Distance covered: 11 km (6.8 miles).

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Pacaymayo

Day two is the most challenging but rewarding part of the trek. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin the steep ascent to Warmiwañusca, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the trail at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet).

The climb tests your stamina, but the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys make it worth every step. After reaching the pass, you’ll descend to the Pacaymayo campsite at 3,500 meters (11,482 feet). Here, you’ll rest while surrounded by serene mountain landscapes. Total distance: 12 km (7.5 miles).

Day 3: Pacaymayo – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

This day is rich in history and scenery. The trail takes you through the Runkurakay Pass (3,950 meters / 12,959 feet) and past several Inca sites, including the oval-shaped Runkurakay ruins and the intricate Sayacmarca.

The descent through lush cloud forests is a visual treat, leading you to Phuyupatamarca, a site known as «The Town Above the Clouds.» The final stretch brings you to Wiñay Wayna, an impressive archaeological complex and your last campsite before Machu Picchu. Distance covered: 16 km (9.9 miles).

Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco

The final day starts early to ensure you reach Intipunku (Sun Gate) in time for sunrise. As the golden light illuminates Machu Picchu, you’ll witness a view that will stay with you forever.

After a guided tour of the citadel, exploring its temples, terraces, and plazas, you’ll have free time to wander and soak in the mystical atmosphere. A train and bus will take you back to Cusco, where your incredible adventure concludes. Distance covered: 5 km (3.1 miles).
