Day 1: Cusco – Lares – Huacawasi

Depart from Cusco early in the morning and travel by bus to the town of Lares, known for its natural hot springs. After a stop to relax and soak in the thermal waters, continue to the remote village of Huacawasi, where you’ll be welcomed by the locals. Enjoy a traditional Andean lunch prepared by the community before embarking on a hike through the stunning Lares Valley. Along the way, pass by traditional homes and fields, interacting with locals who are experts in farming and weaving. Set up camp in Huacawasi, a small community nestled in the valley.

Total Distance: 12 km (5.94 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 7 to 8 hours. Maximum Altitude Point: Quishuarani; Cancha Cancha = 3,800 m / 12,467 feet.

Day 2: Huacawasi – Cancha Cancha

After a nutritious breakfast, start your hike from Huacawasi to Cancha Cancha. Today’s trek offers spectacular views of the Andes as you climb higher into the mountains. Along the way, visit more traditional communities, learning about the local way of life and customs. The trail takes you past remote Inca ruins and breathtaking Andean landscapes.

Total Distance: 16 km (9.94 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 8 to 9 hours. Maximum Altitude Point: 4,100 m / 13,451 feet.

Day 3: Cancha Cancha – Ollantaytambo

oday’s hike is one of the most challenging but rewarding parts of the trek. After a hearty breakfast, start the ascent over the mountains, passing through high-altitude terrain with stunning vistas of the Andes. Descend towards Ollantaytambo, an important Inca archaeological site with well-preserved Inca terraces and structures. Explore the town and its markets before spending the night in a comfortable lodge.

Total Distance: 19 km (11.81 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 9 to 10 hours. Maximum Altitude Point: 4,250 m / 13,944 feet.

Day 4: Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

After an early breakfast, take a train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, board a bus to Machu Picchu. Arrive in time to watch the sunrise over the ancient city, then take a guided tour exploring the temples, plazas, and terraces of Machu Picchu. After the tour, enjoy free time to explore the site further on your own. In the afternoon, return to Aguas Calientes, have lunch, and take the train back to Cusco. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.

Important info

  • Accommodation: 3 nights of camping in tents with foam mattresses.
  • Meals: 4x Breakfast, 4x Lunch, 4x Snack, 3x Dinner. Meals as indicated in the itinerary. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary preferences can be accommodated. Please notify us in advance.
  • Transportation: Transport from your hotel in Cusco to Lares and back. Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes on day 4 and transportation from Aguas Calientes to Cusco.
  • Local Guides & Team: English/Spanish speaking guide with a minimum of 3 years of guiding experience. Certified porters to carry camping gear and equipment. All guides carry first aid kits and extra oxygen bottles for emergencies.
  • Meals: Dinner on the first night and lunch on the last day in Aguas Calientes.
  • Equipment: Sleeping bags ($25.00 per person, available for rent). Trekking poles ($15.00 per person, available for rent).
  • Optional Activities: Entrance to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain ($60.00 per person, check availability in advance). Shuttle bus down from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes ($12.00 per person).
  • Other Costs: Tips for guide (customary but voluntary), national or international flights, travel insurance. Other activities not mentioned in this itinerary.
  • Book early: Limited permits are available, book at least 3 months in advance.
  • Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Cusco to adjust to the altitude.
  • Gear up: Bring suitable hiking boots, layers for changing weather, and waterproof gear.
  • Essentials: Pack insect repellent, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a personal first aid kit.
  • Optional porter service: Hire a porter to carry your belongings for comfort during the trek.
