Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa

Begin your journey from Cusco, driving to Soraypampa, located at the base of the snow-capped peak, Salkantay. Upon arrival, settle into your campsite and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding Andean landscape. Total Distance: 12 km (7.45 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Wayracmachay

After an early breakfast, begin your ascent to the highest point of the trek at Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 feet). As you climb, witness breathtaking views of the snow-covered Salkantay peak and other surrounding mountains. The trail then descends into the cloud forest, leading you to Wayracmachay for your overnight stay. Total Distance: 22 km (13.67 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 9 to 10 hours.

Day 3: Wayracmachay – Chaullay – Santa Teresa

Descend further into the lush, tropical cloud forest, passing by coffee plantations, waterfalls, and rivers. Lunch is served in Chaullay, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break. Continue your journey to Santa Teresa, where you will spend the night. Total Distance: 18 km (11.18 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 4: Santa Teresa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

Start the day with a short hike through the scenic landscape to Hidroelectrica. From here, follow the train tracks for a few hours to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Spend the evening in Aguas Calientes, where you can explore the town or prepare for your early visit to Machu Picchu the next day. Total Distance: 20 km (12.42 miles). Estimate Walking Time: 7 to 8 hours.

Important info

  • Accommodation: 3 nights of camping in private tents with foam mattresses.
  • Meals: 4x Breakfast, 3x Lunch, 3x Snack, 3x Dinner. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary preferences can be accommodated. Please notify us in advance.
  • Transportation: Private transport from your hotel in Cusco to Soraypampa and back. Train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco. Bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.
  • Local Guides & Team: English/Spanish speaking professional guide with a minimum of 3 years of guiding experience. Personal porters to carry camping gear and equipment. All guides carry first aid kits and extra oxygen bottles for emergencies.
  • Meals: Dinner on the last night in Aguas Calientes.
  • Equipment: Sleeping bags ($25.00 per person, available for rent). Trekking poles ($15.00 per person, available for rent).
  • Optional Activities: Entrance to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain ($60.00 per person, check availability in advance). Shuttle bus down from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes ($12.00 per person).
  • Other Costs: Tips for guide (customary but voluntary), national or international flights, travel insurance. Other activities not mentioned in this itinerary.
  • Book early: Limited permits are available, book at least 3 months in advance.
  • Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Cusco to adjust to the altitude.
  • Gear up: Bring suitable hiking boots, layers for changing weather, and waterproof gear.
  • Essentials: Pack insect repellent, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a personal first aid kit.
