 OVERVIEW

 

The Ausangate snow-capped peak is located 100 km southwest of the Cusco region in the Vilcanota mountain range of the Peruvian Andes. With an enormous elevation of 6,385 m / 20,948 ft, it is the fifth highest mountain in Peru. The region is inhabited by high-altitude llama and alpaca farming communities and is one of the few remaining in the world.

Today, the Ausangate trek is one of the most famous treks in the region. The hike offers its visitors spectacular mountain scenery and natural beauty, combined with a geography of many contrasts, with many glaciers and colorful blue lagoons, as well as its picturesque valleys. A great variety of flora and fauna lives here along the way, including chinchillas, vicuñas, Andean foxes and the magnificent Andean condor, among other species.

Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco - Tinqui Village - Upis Hot Springs

We will leave Cusco very early in the morning to the village of Tinqui in our private transportation. On the way we will see the impressive Vilcanota mountain range, as well as several traditional Andean villages and take some time to take some pictures.

When we are in Tinqui (where our trek will begin) while our team will organize all the group’s camping equipment and packs on the horses. We will then begin our hike through the farming communities and enjoy the breathtaking mountains that surround the Peruvian Andes.

Our hike will last 3 hours and then we will have an hour stop for lunch. Then we continue for another 2 hours until we reach Upis (4,100 masl / 13,448 ft), in this beautiful place we will have the opportunity to relax in some local hot springs before dinner, it is in this place where we will camp under the stars.

Day 02: Upis - Arapa Pass - Pucacocha Lake

We will begin our second day of trekking, after a great breakfast to recharge our batteries. We will walk until we reach the Arapa Pass (4,850 masl = 15,908 feet). From there we will enjoy the contrast between the dry desert like hills and the impressive views of the snow-capped mountains.

Ausangate and Pucacocha. This place has three beautiful lagoons with shades of red, green and turquoise (Pucacocha, Hatun Pucacocha and Qomercocha). We will continue our trek until we reach our second campsite near the Ausangate Glacier.

Day 3. Queñacancha – Cachicata – Aguas Calientes

Our third day will begin with a hot cup of coca tea, as a greeting to the Apus, it will be one of the most beautiful days of the trek. We will see the rainbow mountain in the distance. In addition, we will pass through the village of Alccatauri, where we will appreciate the traditional life of its people. This day begins with a 1.5 hour climb to reach the Ausangate pass (4,930 masl / 16,170 ft), here we will be able to see red mountains and also vicuñas, chinchillas and alpacas.

Then we will descend for 1 hour and a half until we reach the village of Alccatauri (4,400 masl). Our stay in the village where we will appreciate the hospitality of the locals with offerings of coca leaves to the Apus (Sacred Mountains) and it is something very valuable because this precious Peruvian treasure cannot be cultivated in this climate. We will then walk 30 minutes to our lunch spot in a rustic house.

We will then continue our journey to the second pass for 1.5 hours until we reach the Minasniyuq pass. Here we will be able to see our first views of the rainbow mountain (5,020 masl / 16,469 ft) also here we will offer the Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) some sweets or cookies as an offering to allow us to get here.

Finally we will walk downhill for 1 hour to our campsite, Surine Cocha (4,800 masl / 15,748 ft), our campsite will be on the shores of the beautiful Surine Lake.

Day 04: Surine Cocha - Rainbow Mountain - Quesiuno Village - Cusco

Finally we arrive to the fourth and last day of our trip through the Peruvian Andes, our day will start with a great breakfast, then we will hike gradually for 2 hours until we reach the famous Rainbow Mountain (5,020 masl / 16,469 ft).

Your guide will explain what makes these mountains unique, you will also have time to take the best pictures, you can also visit the red valley if you still have energy (optional) then we will continue hiking until we reach the village of Quesiuno.

After 3 hours of hiking we will have our lunch. Finally our private van will be waiting to pick us up. After 4 hours we will arrive to Cusco, after this rewarding and once in a lifetime experience, we will drop you off at your hotel in Cusco. We will arrive around 5:00 pm approximately.

Important info

  • English speaking guide, plus an assistant guide for big groups.
