 OVERVIEW

The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is frequently regarded as the greatest option to the Inca Trail. The high-altitude journey begins in the snow-capped Andes and ends in the cloud forests at Machu Picchu.

The Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu was named one of the greatest 25 hikes in the world by National Geographic Travel Magazine. The route provides a little bit of everything, with jaw-dropping views at every bend.

The adventure starts high in the Andes. It takes you through various small settlements before dropping you off in the tropical zone.

Salkantay Pass, at 4600 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the Salkantay Trekking route. To avoid altitude sickness, we strongly advise you to spend a few days in Cusco before to the hike.

HIGHLIGHT DESTINATION

Itinerary

Day 1. Challancancha - Soroypampa

In the morning we will pick you up at your hotel very early, then travel on for approximately two and a half hours towards the town of Mollepata where we will stop for about an hour to have breakfast.

There we will catch our private transport on to Challacancha where we will begin our hike. We will trek for about 3 hours until we arrive to Soraypampa (3800m) where we will have lunch and enjoy magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains Humantay (4120m / 13500ft and Salkantay (6271m / 20575ft).

After lunch, we will have an optional hike to Lake Humantay, which is one hour further uphill from Soraypampa (first campsite)

Day 2. Soraypampa - Chaullay

Following a nutritional breakfast we will begin our trek towards the highest path for today; Salkantay Pass (4600m), which will take approximately 4 hours. This trail is found between the two snow-capped peaks called Salkantay and Humantay. We will have two rest stops, at Salkantaypampa and Suyrocqocha, with the best views of both mountains once we arrive at the pass (chances of snow depends on the weather).

After enjoying this place we will continue on, making our way downhill this time for approximately 2 hours towards Huayracmachay, where we will have lunch. We will then descend through cloudy woodlands until arriving to our second campsite called Chaullay.

Day 3. Salkantay Trek: Chaullay – La Playa

After breakfast at 6.30 am, we will begin our hike, viewing a variety of flora and fauna such as orchids and tropical fruits of the region, parakeets, parrots, etc. on this day. We will pass by little streams and waterfalls, trekking for about five hours, until we arrive at our lunch stop; Sahuayaco Beach.

From there we will catch our transport on to the Hydroelectric Plant, from which point we will walk along the train tracks for approximately two and a half hours until we arrive to the town of Aguas Calientes (hostal and dinner included there)

Day 4. Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu

We will wake up very early in the morning around 5:00 am to have breakfast then trek up to Machupichu. It should take us about an hour and a half to get to the entrance gate. (You will have the option to catch the first bus up to MachuPicchu which leaves at 5:30 am and takes approximately 30 minutes.)

We will have a guided visit for about 2 hours, of the most significant areas of the Inca citadel, following which you will have the opportunity to explore on your own, and visit the Sun Gate and Inca Bridge, both of which take about an hour and a half each.

After having enjoyed Machupicchu you can return to the town of Aguas Calientes to catch your return train to Ollantaytambo and from there you will have private transport on to Cusco.
