OVERVIEW
Our half-day Sacred Valley bike trip to Maras and Moray is designed to provide you with the greatest and most memorable experiences of the two prominent locations in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. As you travel to Cusco and begin to acclimate before seeing Machu Picchu, this is one of the nicest activities you can do.
You will be riding through the Peruvian countryside on our brand new mountain bikes, accompanied by a local expert, to visit the circular terraces of Moray and the Salt Mines of Maras.
Both Maras and Moray were important in the lives of the Incas. These are the most popular tourist attractions in the Sacred Valley of the Incas today.
Moray:
The circular agricultural terraces in Moray are reminiscent of the Roman amphitheatre. The terrace is a large, multi-leveled pit cut into the earth. The temperature is varied on each floor. In fact, the temperature on the terrace varies by 15 degrees Celsius from top to bottom.
Here, the Incas experimented with agricultural development conditions. This allowed them to figure out what temperature was ideal for growing vegetables and grains. Peru currently produces over 800 different potato types as a result of this.
Maras:
Maras is a lovely Andean town nestled among the snow-capped hills of the Andes. The salt mines, which are nestled on one side of a hill, are located here. Since pre-Incan culture, these geometrically designed salt pools have been employed to extract salts.
It is passed down through the generations. People still harvest salt using the classic solar evaporation process. They let the natural spring water to flow in and then wait for it to evaporate. They next scrape the salt out of the puddle by hand.
Maras salt is reddish in color and has a distinctive flavor. Locals claim that it is also nutrient-dense.

HIGHLIGHT DESTINATION
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Maras Moray – Salineras - Cusco.
To start this wonderful day mountain biking tour around Maras Moray and salt mines, we will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 am. and drive 45 minutes to arrive in Cruz Pata (it is a part of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour route) where we will start the bike tour.
We will pass by a local farm and small villages where the local people are doing their daily life, after 1 hour and a half of riding we will arrive at Moray, a unique archaeological site in the region.
It consists of enormous depressions or holes in the surface of the ground, where Incas built gigantic terraces to use as a center for agricultural experimentation.
What is surprising is that the average annual temperature is different between the top and bottom.
After visiting Moray we continue towards (DownHill) to the northwest of the village Maras and arrive at the famous “Salt Mines“.
The “salt mines” consist of about more than 4000 small pools with an average surface of 5 m², built on a slope of the mountain “Qaqawiñay”.
People fill or “water” the pools with saltwater emanating from a natural spring located at the top of the complex, then we continue to Urubamba, where we take a transport service to return to Cusco (6 p.m.).
The biking tour around Moray is one of the best options to acclimatize your body, it is highly recommended doing physical activities before traveling to Machu Picchu by train or for longer adventures such as the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trail or lares trek to Machu Picchu.
