OVERVIEW
A full-day visit to the famous suspension bridge, which is also the only remaining Inca bridge, is one of the must do activities in Cusco. In the settlement of Keshwa Chaca, there is a grass rope bridge known as Q’eswachaka (pronounced Keshwa Chaca). Qeswa, which means braid, and Chaka, which means bridge, are the two Quechua words that make up the name.
During the Inca civilisation, several roads were built to promote communication inside the enormous Inca empire. Qhapaq Nan was the most well-known (the Great Inca Road). It is approximately 60,000 kilometers long. Suspension bridges were built in areas where topographical limits prevented the construction of Inca Roads.
The Qeswachaka Inca Bridge is located south of Cusco. It has a length of 33 meters and a width of 1.20 meters. The Apurimac River is 15 meters below the bridge, which is 15 meters above the river. Residents from the communities of Huinchiri Chaupibanda, Choccayhua, and Ccolana Queue restore the bridge every year.
It’s a four-day event that’s been acknowledged by prestigious networks like NOVA and the BBC. In 2009, the Peruvian government classified the Q’eswachaka bridge as a cultural historic monument.
